Nervous patient (or know someone who is)? Read this.

As you (hopefully!) know, at Brightside we’re the home of calm and gentle dentistry.

We don’t believe going to the dentist should hurt, and we believe that the entire process should be calm and free of stress.

For some patients, it’s a case of going at their pace, making sure they’re relaxed, ensuring they’ve got the information they need, and using various pain reduction techniques.

For others, who are perhaps even more nervous, and have maybe even avoided dental visits as a result of their fear or anxiety, we provide Intravenous (IV) Sedation, which allows them to undergo treatment in a deeply relaxed state.

What is IV Sedation?

IV sedation is the most effective method for managing severe dental anxiety and we’ve provided this for hundreds of patients over the years.

A small tube is placed in your arm or hand, and the medication is delivered directly into your bloodstream, resulting in deep relaxation throughout your treatment.

Unlike oral sedation, IV sedation works quickly and can be adjusted throughout the procedure for maximum comfort. Though you remain responsive, most patients remember little to nothing about their treatment – making them feel as if the procedure only lasted a few minutes.

Is IV Sedation for you?

If you:

·      Experience severe dental phobia

·      Need multiple or complex treatments in one visit

·      Have difficulty getting numb with local anaesthesia

·      Have a strong gag reflex or fear of dental instruments

…IV sedation could be the right option for you,

If you are considering IV sedation in order to help you get the treatment you need, here’s what you need to know:

 Before your Appointment

· You’ll have a consultation to review your medical history and determine if IV sedation is right for you.

· You’ll be advised how to prepare for your visit.

 During your Appointment

· A small tube will be placed in your arm, and the sedative will take effect within minutes.

· You’ll feel calm, deeply relaxed, and possibly drowsy but will still be able to respond to instructions.

· Your vital signs (heart rate, oxygen levels, blood pressure) will be closely monitored for safety.

 After the Appointment

· You won’t remember much, if anything, about your treatment.

· You’ll need a trusted friend or family member to take you home.

· Plan for a restful day, as you may feel groggy for a few hours.

If you or someone you know has been putting off dental treatment because of fear or anxiety, it could well be that sedation is the right next step, helping to provide a stress-free, pain-free experience.
