National No Smoking Day 14th March 2018

No Smoking Day is an annual health awareness day in the United Kingdom which is intended to help smokers who want to quit smoking. The first No Smoking Day was on Ash Wednesday in 1984 and it now takes place on the second Wednesday in March.

Each year, the campaign is promoted with a theme, which this year is Pick Your Way. The thinking behind this is that we are all different and by choosing the best way for you to quit, you have a higher likelihood of being successful.

As most people know, smoking has many negative effects on your health. By stopping smoking, here are some of the dental benefits you may have:

Reduction in gum disease and the severity of it and increased effectiveness of gum disease treatments
Lower risk of tooth loss (for smokers it’s twice that of non-smokers)
Infected tooth root (twice that of non-smokers)
Increased ability to fight infection, including in the mouth and gums
Faster healing of gum tissue after oral surgery or from injury and less chance of infection
Reduced stain build up and discolouration of the teeth
Lower risk of mouth cancer
