Is fluoride good for your teeth?
Many people are unsure of the answer to this question. There have been lots of studies and debates about the topic and whether water should be fluoridated for many years, however there is strong evidence that fluoride is beneficial for the health of the mouth.
A recent report published by Public Health England found that fluoride in the water significantly improves oral health.
The report found that 28% of 5 year olds and 21% of 12 year olds in areas with water fluoridation had no dental decay compared with those areas without.

1. Fluoride helps dental health greatly by strengthening the enamel and making it more resistant to tooth decay
2. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in many foods and in drinking water
3. The addition of fluoride to water supplies has been found to reduce the incidence of dental decay by 40-60%
4. The addition of fluoride to toothpaste has reduced the incidence of dental decay by up to 50%
5. Only around 12% of the population in England have fluoridated water
6. Children up to 3 years old should use a toothpaste containing 1000ppm fluoride. After 3 years they should use a toothpaste with a level of 1350-1500ppm. There are high fluoride toothpastes available for those who may be high risk for dental decay
7. Fluoride varnishes applied at the dentist can also help reduce the risk of dental decay in children and adults
8. There is no scientific evidence of any adverse effects of water fluoridation
