The critical link between your mouth and…

The start of the New Year is often the time many of us focus on our health – resolving to get back in the gym, making a plan to eat better and generally look after our bodies more.

And if you’re doing that, great.

But here I am with your friendly dentist reminder not to neglect your oral health, because keeping your mouth healthy is inextricably linked to an overall healthier body.

Here’s how your oral health can have an impact beyond your mouth:

1. Gum Health and Heart Health: Studies have shown a link between gum disease and cardiovascular conditions, such as heart disease and stroke. The bacteria from inflamed gums can enter your bloodstream and contribute to inflammation in other parts of the body, including your heart.

2. Diabetes: Gum disease and diabetes share a two-way relationship. Poorly managed diabetes can worsen gum disease, while gum infections can make it harder to control blood sugar levels.

3. Pregnancy: Hormonal changes during pregnancy can increase the risk of gum disease, which has been linked to premature birth and low birth weight. Good oral care is essential for both mother and baby.

4. Respiratory Health: Bacteria from your mouth can travel to your lungs, potentially causing or worsening respiratory conditions like pneumonia.

5. Mental Health: Oral health issues, such as chronic pain or missing teeth, can affect self-esteem and contribute to anxiety or depression.

As you start to appreciate these links, it starts to become clear just how critical it is to look after your mouth and take your oral health seriously – here’s how you do just that:

· Stick to daily habits: Brush twice a day, floss once a day and and rinse with mouthwash to help keep harmful bacteria in check.

· Come and see us regularly: Routine checkups and hygiene visits allow us to catch problems early and prevent future issues. If it’s been a while since your last visit, make booking in a matter of urgency now.

· Eat well: A balanced diet supports healthy teeth and gums. Limit sugary snacks and drinks, and focus on nutrient-rich foods like leafy greens, dairy, and crunchy fruits and vegetables.

· Quit Smoking: Smoking increases the risk of gum disease, tooth loss, and oral cancer, and it’s obviously really bad for your whole body too
